BeZero Carbon is a global ratings agency for the Voluntary Carbon Market. Combining expertise across climate science, finance and policy, it provides ratings, risk, and data tools that improve information accessibility and decision making. Its aim is to build markets for environmental impact.

Team BeZero

  • Dave van Wees

Dave van Wees is a Remote Sensing scientist at BeZero Carbon, a global carbon ratings agency (2023 - now). Previously, he worked as post-doctoral research scholar (2022-2023) and PhD researcher (2016-2022) at VU-University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During his PhD, he developed an approach to estimate global forest losses from fire (van Wees et al., 2021) and a novel 500-m resolution global fire emissions product (van Wees and van der Werf, 2019; van Wees et al., 2022), resulting in improved attribution of carbon losses from fire.

  • Niels Andela

Niels Andela is head of Remote Sensing at BeZero Carbon, a global carbon ratings agency (2022 - now). Previously, he worked as post-doctoral research scholar and assistant research professor as NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (2015-2020), and as a lecturer in remote sensing at Cardiff University (2020-2022). During his PhD program (2012 – 2015) Andela worked within the EU Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate (MACC) project, where he contributed to the development of the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) and other strategies to constrain global fire emissions. He received his PhD in 2016 from VU-University in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
