The Amazon experienced an exceptional extreme fire season in 2024. During this season, the Sense4Fire project provided updates of fire emissions from the GFA-S4F and TUD-S4F approaches. Thereby the objective was to demonstrate the near-real time capabilities of the Sense4Fire approaches in providing estimates of fire emissions.

We provide the following datsets for the fire season 2024 in the Amazon and Cerrado:

  • Total fire CO emissions in 2024

The map shows the fire types and total carbon monoxide emissions over the Amazon and Cerrado in the year 2024. Fire types are from the GFA-S4F aprpoach and emissions are estimated with the TUD-S4F approach from the Sense4Fire project. The data is originally produced at a spatial resolution of 333 x 333 m but here visualised at a resolution of 0.1° x 0.1°.

  • Comparison of emission approaches

The figure shows daily and cumulative total emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) in the Amazon and Cerrado region between 1st January and 30th September 2024 from the GFA-S4F and TUD-S4F approaches in Sense4Fire. The Sense4Fire estimates are much higher than the CO emissions from the Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS) of the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service.
